The Nikon D100 Digital Slr Camera is a well-designed and sporty camera. It’s one I can bring the world over, to document those out of the ordinary moments in my life. I bring it out to catch my friends’ faces when we’re together, family celebrations and all kinds of times and places I don’t want to forget.
Getting my first camera is a particular memory in itself. It was a present from my parents for Christmas when I was 10. Oh the giddy pleasure of being able to immortalize images on film! Now I would be able to take my memories with me anywhere my dad’s job brought us.
On my dad’s side I come from a gigantic Irish family. My dad’s first cousins alone numbered almost 100. All that family and the celebrations we experienced were great excuses to snap photos. And all those pictures of all those family members have come with me throughout my life.
As my father’s work brought us across the U.S and to Europe I took pictures of whatever I saw. I hold pictures of my family visiting just about every “important” landmark or monument, all over the country. When we moved overseas, there were even more reasons for picture-taking — so many new activities and exotic locales.
Then along came digital picture-taking and it appeared the possibilities were endless. To begin with, no more did I have to put snapshots in the mail to give them to someone else. Since all my friends are on email I could launch pictures instantaneously anyplace in the world. And cropping no longer had to be completed in the darkroom! How cool to be able to manage red eye, correct contrast and even more, right from my desk!
Life has changed; I’m no longer a kid, moving around with my mom and dad, but I have kids of my own. The memories I record are different, but my camera is still forever with me. The memories are still of family vacations and growing kids, but this time I’m the grown up. And don’t forget all the family celebrations that make our lives so rich.
My “extended family” now consists of those that are in no way connected to me in a physical sense, but instead are such good friends that we have become family. My camera helps me to hang on to these memories for not just myself, but my kids, and all the people that I can share my pictures with.
A buddy of mine who wants to get into photography just asked what i thought. It’s difficult to pick a favorite camera after all my years of photography, but I would have to say it’s my Nikon. There just isn’t a camera I rely on more with the memories of my family, friends and travels.
